Song of Songs 8 ·

1

O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee outside, I would kiss thee; and none would scorn me.

2

I would lead thee, and bring thee into the house of my mother who brought me up: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine, of the juice of my pomegranate.

3

His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me.

4

הִשְׁבַּ֥עְתִּי אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּנ֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם מַה־תָּעִ֧ירוּ ׀ וּֽמַה־תְּעֹ֥רְר֛וּ אֶת־הָאַהֲבָ֖ה עַ֥ד שֶׁתֶּחְפָּֽץ׃ {ס}

I charge you, O daughters of Yerushalayim, that you stir not up, nor awaken my love, until it please.

5

Who is that, coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I roused thee under the apple tree: there thy mother was in travail with thee: there she who bore thee was in travail.

6

Set me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thy arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as She᾽ol: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which have a most vehement flame.

7

מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֗ים לֹ֤א יֽוּכְלוּ֙ לְכַבּ֣וֹת אֶת־הָֽאַהֲבָ֔ה וּנְהָר֖וֹת לֹ֣א יִשְׁטְפ֑וּהָ אִם־יִתֵּ֨ן אִ֜ישׁ אֶת־כׇּל־ה֤וֹן בֵּיתוֹ֙ בָּאַהֲבָ֔ה בּ֖וֹז יָב֥וּזוּ לֽוֹ׃ {ס}

Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.

8

We have a little sister, and she has no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?

9

If she be a wall, we will build upon her a battlement of silver: and if she be a door, we will enclose her with boards of cedar.

10

אֲנִ֣י חוֹמָ֔ה וְשָׁדַ֖י כַּמִּגְדָּל֑וֹת אָ֛ז הָיִ֥יתִי בְעֵינָ֖יו כְּמוֹצְאֵ֥ת שָׁלֽוֹם׃ {פ}

I was a wall, and my breasts were like towers: then was I in his eyes as one who finds content.

11

Shelomo had a vineyard at Ba῾al-hamon; he let out the vineyard to keepers; everyone for its fruit was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.

12

My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Shelomo, may have the thousand, and those that keep its fruit two hundred.

13

Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken for thy voice: cause me to hear it.

14

Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like a gazelle or a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
