Judges 4 ·

1

And the children of Yisra᾽el again did evil in the sight of the Lord, when Ehud was dead.

2

And the Lord sold them into the hand of Yavin king of Kena῾an, who reigned in Ḥażor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Ḥaroshet-haggoyim.

3

וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֠י תְּשַׁ֨ע מֵא֤וֹת רֶֽכֶב־בַּרְזֶל֙ ל֔וֹ וְ֠ה֠וּא לָחַ֞ץ אֶת־בְּנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּחׇזְקָ֖ה עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃ {פ}

And the children of Yisra᾽el cried to the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he strongly oppressed the children of Yisra᾽el.

4

And Devora, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidot, she judged Yisra᾽el at that time.

5

And she dwelt under the palm tree of Devora between Rama and Bet-el in mount Efrayim: and the children of Yisra᾽el came up to her for judgment.

6

And she sent and called Baraq the son of Avino῾am out of Qedesh-naftali, and said to him, Has not the Lord God of Yisra᾽el commanded, saying, Go and gather your men to mount Tavor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naftali and of the children of Zevulun?

7

And I will draw out to thee to the wadi of Qishon, Sisera, the captain of Yavin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

8

And Baraq said to her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.

9

And she said, I will surely go with thee: however thou shalt scarcely attain honour on the journey that thou goest; for the Lord shall yield Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Devora arose, and went with Baraq to Qedesh.

10

And Baraq summoned Zevulun and Naftali to Qedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Devora went up with him.

11

Now Ḥever the Qenite, who was of the children of Ḥovav the father in law of Moshe, had severed himself from Qayin, and pitched his tent near the oak in Ża῾anannim, which is by Qedesh.

12

And they told Sisera that Baraq the son of Avino῾am was gone up to mount Tavor.

13

And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Ḥaroshet-haggoyim to the wadi of Qishon.

14

And Devora said to Baraq, Up; for this is the day on which the Lord has delivered Sisera into thy hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Baraq went down from mount Tavor, and ten thousand men after him.

15

And the Lord confounded Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Baraq; so that Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away by foot.

16

But Baraq pursued after the chariots, and after the host, as far as Ḥaroshet-haggoyim: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

17

But Sisera fled away by foot to the tent of Ya᾽el the wife of Ḥever the Qenite: for there was peace between Yavin the king of Ḥażor and the house of Ḥever the Qeni.

18

And Ya᾽el went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in to her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket.

19

And he said to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

20

Then he said to her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, if any man comes and inquires of thee, and says, Is there anyone here? that thou shalt say, No.

21

Then Ya᾽el Ḥever’s wife took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and drove the tent peg into his temple, and fastened it to the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.

22

And, behold, as Baraq pursued Sisera, Ya᾽el came out to meet him, and said to him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the peg in his temple.

23

So God subdued on that day Yavin the king of Kena῾an before the children of Yisra᾽el.

24

וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ יַ֤ד בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָל֣וֹךְ וְקָשָׁ֔ה עַ֖ל יָבִ֣ין מֶלֶךְ־כְּנָ֑עַן עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִכְרִ֔יתוּ אֵ֖ת יָבִ֥ין מֶלֶךְ־כְּנָֽעַן׃ {פ}

And the hand of the children of Yisra᾽el prevailed more and more against Yavin the king of Kena῾an, until they had destroyed Yavin king of Kena῾an.
